Donation pages for unregistered charities

Events

Alex Ware Manager at Making Memories Posted 6 years ago

Hi everyone
I'm new to this site and helping start a new charity is new aswell.  After years of fundraising for numerous other charities. I have got involved with starting a new one.  We are wanting to offer special days out to families that have a child with a terminal illness.  Which is where the name came from Making Memories.
I have people wanting to do events in our name and I am being asked if we have a just giving page.  Now the research I have done so far, is that you have to be registered to sign up.  We are not registered yet, but does anyone know of any company or site that will offer an unregistered charity a donation page.  Thanks for your help and advice, in advance.

You could use go fund me as an interim solution. Anyone can use this not just registered charities but also individuals etc. It’s a useful tool in the early days.

What you need to do is to register with HMRC as charitable. You can do this while being an unincorporated association, or some other form of charity (eg Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community, which cannot register with the Commission). You can do this as long as you have a constitution which is charitable [Edit - but see Ben's comment below]. Once you have this you are eligible to claim Gift Aid, can register with donation platforms (eg PayPal Giving Fund) and get other charity perks like Google Ad Grants.
You do have to watch your income level though. Once your income goes above a certain threshold you have to register with the Commission unless you have a legal structure which is exempt from doing so.

Alex Ware   Following on from Ed's useful advice this is what I normally share with charities looking to register with HMRC:
Registering with HMRC is a lot easier than registering with the Charity Commission. To do this you will need to visit the HMRC Charities web-page (more specifically, the part about charitable recognition). You will need to either apply online or complete the ChV1 form and send it by post. Do read all the guidance provided to do this. Please be aware that as part of your application, you will need to provide supporting evidence of your charitable purposes, and normally a Small Charity Constitution will not suffice. You will probably have to consider developing one of the longer model Governing Documents provided by the Charity Commission. HMRC also expect your charity to already have a bank account set up. If you have any questions, I'd recommend calling the HMRC Charities Helpline (0300 123 1073). They are usually very helpful.
Hope this helps!

Ben Araya Larrain   Thanks for this information.
I am also new here and have a new charity which I want to register. I have been thinking what better way to achieve this. I already have created my website which is still developing gradually. But taking the next step for registration and the right and legal donation link, has been quite a challenge. My website address is www.zitasesfoundationsupport.org

Hi Alex,
What a wonderful cause, wishing you much success.  If you are struggling with charity status you could use something like Stripe.  Set up a simple website and create a donations page there.  Our site uses wordpress and they have add-ins to enable payments using stripe.  Not sure whether they are the cheapest anymore, but it is certainly an option.
