Fundraising... How do small charities manage it?

Hi there, I was just wondering whether anyone had any advice as to the best way to start fundraising for a small charity. We cannot afford to take on a fundraising specialist and yet it is obviously such a nuanced and specialised science!
Are there people that do some pro bono work or advice for charities?
