Fundraising Wisdom #11 - Relationship

Craig Schoolkate Digital Fundraising & Marketing Executive at Barnardo's Posted 7 months ago

Hello everyone,
I recently attended a workshop with a terrific agency and other large charities.
The workshop was about relationships with our supporters.
We were invited to reflect on how we see them. If we see donors as people who give us money, what does that mean for our relationship?
It means we're a charity asking them to give us money.
What if we shifted the relationship?
What if we saw the donor as a member of our team? How would that affect our relationship?
It would mean we'd put their interests at the forefront of every decision we make. It would connect us to them deeper. It would help them feel more a part of our charity, than some external person who gives to us. It would help them feel more invested in our charity and cause.
A cracking piece of wisdom that came out of the workshop was "Supporters don't sign up to your email list - they sign up to your mission."
I believe this simple mentality shift I can be very powerful, as it can change every business decision for the better.
Best regards,
Craig Schoolkate
