What is needed for sponsor programs? (like Dogs Trust, etc)

Hi all, I am looking into what is needed for a sponsorship programme, like those done by animal charities by sponsoring a kennel, etc.
I have our plan figured out. But I have heard off a colleague that we need some changes to allow us to actually run this programme. But I am unable to find anything about what we would need to do.
Has anyone set up this kind of programme and if so was there anything you need to do before setting up the sponsor programme.
