Copywriter transitioning into the sector. Advice?

Claudia Manca Content Writer at Qisetna Posted 4 years ago

Hi everyone!
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this post - I promise it won’t take long!
This seems like such a lovely and welcoming forum so I hope a kind soul can give me some advice.
I’ve been working in the creative industries mainly as a copywriter and contributing writer for 5 years. However, my academic background is in International Relations and have experience from previous and ongoing volunteering roles.
In the last year, I realised it was time to combine my professional experience with more meaningful causes I care about. I also felt the need to specialise in an area I find particularly interesting and problematic: migration. I applied to the Migration and Diaspora Studies MA programme at SOAS but I deferred to next year because of the pandemic. I wasn’t able to get any freelance work in advance that would have allowed me to study part-time and support myself at the same time.
In the meanwhile, I’ve been volunteering and looking for entry to mid-level roles in organisations that had vacancies in content, copywriting or communications. However, when it comes to non-volunteering roles, I’ve had zero luck and never heard back. I’m aware that it’s a very specific moment in time and sadly many people have lost their job. The number of applications is so high it would be impossible to get back to everyone, but I would be eternally grateful for some advice.
I’d love to be able to make this career change regardless of the MA and I’m willing to do whatever it takes, starting off by asking you, the experts. Any piece of advice is hugely appreciated!
Thanks again for reading and have a lovely day,
Claudia
