Gift Aid: Who's responsible??

Sarah McDonagh Development & Quality Manager at The Hope Centre - St Helens Posted 8 months ago

Hi there! can we chat gift aid?
A retired colleague has recently received a tax bill for gift aid - they had continued to financially support the charity post-retirement and appears their tax status changed and they hadn't considered the impact their change in financial circumstances would have.
We have updated the Gift Aid spreadsheet we use to capture the Gift Aiders and are considering sending out a mail shot for to thank them for their donations but to remind them that any changes to their tax status is their responsibility?
This is a fairly extensive list and time consuming job, especially if posting out letters we are wondering if this is the best route to prevent others getting in the same situation.
We would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions and would it be the "moral" thing to help out by reimbursing or encourage them to challenge the decision - obviously income isn't so great if you're not paying tax...
Thank you🙏
