RIP Captain Tom—a real morale boost...but did his story distract from under-investment in the NHS?

I was sad to hear that Captain Tom had passed away. He, for many both old and young in such dark days, has been a beacon of hope and inspiration to 'Walk On'. For that reason alone, he is a testament to living life to full!
However, I wonder, if his efforts engendered a spirit of charitable giving across the board or did it distract from under-investment in the NHS? If we have a certain amount of disposable income for charity giving have smaller charities lost out... or have we become more charitable?
I would welcome opinions.
