Uploading Big Give data to Salesforce

We upload the Big Give data by trying to match data fields to Salesforce but end up with duplicates because, for example, people often have more than one email address and/or use shortened forms of first names. Also, not all fields are compulsory when donating. How do other charities deal with this?
