Advice/tips on switching career to work as policy assistant/officer in mental health charity

Hi,
Hope you are all well and keeping safe. I currently work as Development Assistant at a social housing organisation and I'm volunteer Befriender at Dorset Mind. I'm looking to switch to work in Policy in the Mental Health Sector and would be grateful if you had any ideas to assist in making the move?
