OK, here's a weird one, and maybe this isn't the place to be asking (but I'm too busy to try to ask the sources of these figures: The Charity Commission and NCVO). My confusion is probably because I'm reading the data wrong, or someone's adding apples and orang-utans together and I haven't noticed...
The Charity Commission says gross income for charities was £82,665,245,956 (~£83bn) in the past year being reported upon (the exact figure changes daily but not by that much)
Source: https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/sector-data/sector-overview
NCVO, in the latest Almanac, says total income was £56bn, a difference of £27bn
Source: https://beta.ncvo.org.uk/ncvo-publications/uk-civil-society-almanac-2021/financials/
Anyone have any idea which is right, or why one is so different from the other?
