Hi all,
We were contacted by the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) enquiring as to whether we had a copyright licence, not to protect our work, but to protect us against any claim from others. The language of the email seemed a little odd / pushy / sales-y for an official organisation I thought, so ignored it, but we are now on our third email. Here are a couple of lines from said email
"[...] you and your staff may be infringing on copyright by copying or reusing published content without permission.
A CLA copyright licence is required if any of your staff copy content from over 17 million titles that CLA represents. This includes articles, books, journals, and magazines. For example, if a staff member wants to put an article into a presentation, share it with a colleague, or post it on the company website, they need a copyright licence."
I did check out their website and found this 'CLA is recognised by the UK government as the collective management organisation for published material. We exist to support knowledge sharing, protect your company,...' - which makes them sound kind of officialish I guess...
My question is, do we need to have such a licence? I mean we do on occasion share a link to an online article of relevance to our business, and we do have research people, but they work with academic institutions so any copyright there would be dealt with through those, and some of us do download reports and stuff (I am the most guilty of this, I think I suffer from the virtual equivalent of 'tsundoku' 😂) but does that mean we need one of these licences?
Have any of you been contacted by the CLA? Do you have a licence?
