Employee and volunteer database recommendations

Hi.

I'm looking for some recommendations for cheap (or even better free!) database solutions that would capture everything needed from our employees and volunteers. Is Excel even a possibility?

Some background - I am a trustee of a small charity, we have just one part-time employee (but this will increase this year), and about 150 current volunteers. We are launching a membership scheme later in the year aswell, so we'll need to hold that data too - hopefully on the same system!

Any advice would be gratefully received.
