Can a trustee remain on the board in a non-voting or honorary role?

The trustees want one of our trustees to remain on the board of trustees but not have voting rights due to his ill health. He also wishes to down grade his status.
He has been with the trust for 40 years and we do not want to loose him and all the history he has, he is a very valuable member.
Could he become an honorary trustee or some other sort of trustee?
