This question is from a member of our community that wishes to remain anonymous:
I'm facing a very horrible situation in the charity where I have worked for 12 years.
Last year I was bullied by the Chair and the Treasurer who tried to push me out of work. I decided to raised my grievances and submitted the formal complaint to the manager. In my complaint letter I only mentioned about the bullying from the Chair. The board of trustees set up a sub-committee group which consisted of 3 trustees (the Treasurer who also bullied me also in this group). I protested the treasurer's involvement with the investigation but my manager convinced me that they would appoint an independent investigator. I would be treated fairly.
It turned out the investigator has his connection with the Chair. I wasn't happy but again was made to believe he would just carry out the investigation and made recommendations to the board to decide. He interviewed 4 staff who witnessed the bullying incidents on 3 occasions. During the interviews, the treasurer also sat through to hear everyone's statements. For me it was unavoidable that I had to mention the treasurer's association with the Chair's conduct. Four colleagues who were interviewed gave their statement supporting me as they also faced bullying from the Chair.
The outcomes of the investigation came as my grievances have been found to be unsubstantiated and therefore unjustifiable. All staff were utterly gutted. Then the manager summoned me to a meeting and notified me that the Chair and the Treasurer made formal harassment complaints against me. I'm extremely depressed. The whole board of trustees treated me unfairly. Now the two trustees want a retaliation. I made an appeal but I don't think it would help or change the outcomes.
All staff feel vulnerable in this situation. We are going to send a collective letter to the board to support my appeal. The charity founder who is no longer a trustee but stays as an Honorary President is heart broken to see staff unhappy and get bullied. She wants to request the Chair and Treasurer to resign. Staff are not sure if it will be possible. We think the Chair and the Treasurer will refuse to go.
Could anyone advise please? I looked up the OSCR website and made an enquiry for help but their reply wasn't helpful. They told me to check the Constitution and follow the process.
