Finance Controller Roles in Charity are hard to get

Bianca Caputo Financial Controller at Nuffield Health Posted 5 years ago

I am ready to work as a Finance Controller. I've worked as a director in an Accounting and audit firm. Worked in Charity at a Hospital on an interim basis and really feel now this is my calling. But, can't break through to permanent roles. All the feedback I get is very positive but I seem to be runner-up every time...
Any advice?
Am wondering if mentors are available in this area?

Hi Bianca
These will take longer to pay dividends but you could consider becoming a Charity Treasurer and/or taking a post grad qualification relevant to the Sector to build your knowledge and CV (if you haven’t already).
Good luck

Hi Bianca,
Are you still looking for a permanent role? I work for the NSPCC and  are looking for a Financial Accounting and Control Manager. Would be happy to discuss the role with you further if you are interested.

There are certainly charities looking for good well experienced financial controllers.
If you are looking for a mentor I would be happy to have an initial chat with you. Please direct message me.

Hi Bianca,
So sorry to hear this. We are trying desperately to recruit for a Finance Manager and are still looking!
Things we are looking for at interview: 1)  That you are really interested in WHO you are working for as much as WHAT you will be doing. I am always surprised at people who haven't even looked at our website 2) That you have an understanding of the difference between Charity & commercial accounting (SORP, restricted funds etc) 3) That you are willing to work cross departmentally- for example,  I see Finance & Fundraising as being closely linked and both as being key to future development.
Be prepared for a skills test :)  I am looking always to hire someone better than me. Tell the panel what you have done in your previous role that has added value in a way they can imagine it being of use in their charity-  e.g forecasting (service users, costing model, work force planning etc)
Also - go and look at the CFG (Charity Finance Group)- they have brilliant updates on what is going on in terms of legislation. Good luck!

Bianca Caputo  - can't tempt you to Gloucestershire then ? 😀 Ok, I'll keep an ear out, although I see Rebecca at the NSPCC may be able to help you ! Wishing you every success. In the meantime, if you really think that talking to an entirely male board may be an issue or may be perceived to be an issue, have you thought about getting some mentoring/coaching? Good luck!!

Claire Power-Browne   I'm entirely used to people underestimating my work and can coolly swat the negativity or patronisation.  I know what I've come to do and can achieve. Recruitment agents say I am "charismatic", I don't charm those month-end accounts... I actually produce them. I have worked in practice in S.E.Asia and its very hierachical, and I was always promoted, always rewarded.  I think I will definitely get a mentor.... Thanks for all your advice.

when you say that you get positive feedback, is this feedback for real or fake news. Too many organisations have decided on the candidate but must be seen to go through the process.
Maybe try a recruitment agency that specialises in this area as it is in their interest to place you. Their feedback might be more accurate!
