Managed out of a job I have loved

New

Anonymous user Posted 5 hours ago

I’d really value some outside perspective on what’s happened to me in my charity/events role.
I’m a mid‑career woman in my mid‑40s working in business development and sponsorship. Over time I’ve gone from being seen as strong and capable to feeling deliberately undermined and “managed out”.
Patterns included shifting goalposts, being excluded from key conversations, then blamed; nit‑picking instead of constructive feedback; and a general sense of gaslighting whenever I raised concerns about workload, support or communication.
Despite a solid track record, I was put on a PIP, my anxiety spiralled, and I’ve been signed off since February. I’m now negotiating a settlement rather than returning to what feels like a toxic environment.
This has shattered my confidence. I’m now job‑hunting in the charity/events sector and I’m scared that at 45, with a recent absence and a settlement exit, I’ll quietly be discriminated against or screened out.
I’d really appreciate:
- Experiences from others who’ve been managed out or put on a PIP in the charity sector – how did you rebuild?
- How to explain a situation like this in applications and interviews without harming my prospects.
- Any tips or encouragement for job‑searching in your mid‑40s after a damaging exit.
I’m trying to believe this says more about the organisation than about me, but right now it feels very raw and frightening. Any honest advice or solidarity would mean a lot.
