The Penny for London scheme run by Mayor's Fund for London has closed down after raising £3,394 from 4,316 people 22 months. Through partnerships with companies including Caffe Nero and Leon, they were able to disperse £30,000 to 10 charities - not sure of the breakdown of the funding for that amount though. I'd be interested to hear what everyone's takeaway from the results are? My personal view is:
  • There didn't seem to be much focus on beneficiaries being helped or outcomes as a result of a donation - perhaps this is why it didn't achieve as much uptake as they hoped?
  • 1p seemed like an inconsequential amount and perhaps therefore discouraged people from going through the effort of signing up
  • The technology itself seemed interesting - would love to see more contactless payment mechanisms for donating in the wild generally, and think they could still be models to explore alongside other transactions - Give a Dime and Bstow are examples of this in the US
  • Perhaps the low overall engagement of a donor (small amount of money to part with, invisible deductions after initial sign up, intangible outcome) contributed to results being poorer than expected?
