Setting up board members for my CIC

I am a sole director of a CIC ltd by guarantee and would like to recruit professionals to my organisation in a volunteer capacity. These roles would need to be not legally liable for the company. I would like to be able to apply for grants etc but am aware that being a sole director may not be favourable to funding bodies.
I'd like to recruit 'board members' - or an 'advisory panel' to be able to support me in running the company and to have roles within the organisation for the means of grant applications.
Is such a role possible? Or would they need to be legally liable directors?
