Tips on merging UK charity with Kenyan Charity

Governance

Lesley Churm CEO at KWEST Kenya Watamu Educational Support Trust Posted 1 year ago

We are a small UK registered educational charity that has a Community library and literacy outreach programme in the coastal area of Kenya. We collect donated children's books, ship them out for our local team to use to teach reading/literacy etc at the library and in 15 local Primary schools.
Our work has been recognised by an excellent well established Kenyan Registered charity that sets up Libraries in Govt schools and and we are looking to partner/merge. Their proposal is for them to employ our local literacy team, run the Community library on the same basis and the Outreach Programme. They will also start to open libraries in the some of the schools in the area.
As the UK arm, we would continue to collect books, ship them and fundraise.
The benefits for us as a small charity are huge in terms of making joint grant bids, and ensuring this area of Kenya is provided with libraries and books. They have a great Board and I have been invited to be a Trustee.
My question is how do we go about such a merger. Has anyone done this and can offer advice?
Can we keep our Charity name or do re- register as the UK arm of the other charity?
We are a CIO.
