VAT on member subscriptions and whether we are exempt from paying

Hi
We are a new not-for-profit CIC and we are looking into the pros and cons of registering for VAT. We have a number of capital expenditure items coming up which will incur VAT which we would prefer to reclaim! Much of our income (at the moment) is from donations, but we do also have a membership scheme.
Having read the HMRC guidelines (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/clubs-and-associations-vat-responsibilities-notice-7015#sect12), I believe that we fall into both the "philantropic" and "civic" - either (or both) of which means that our subs should be exempt from VAT.
I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this, please.
