What are the GDPR rules surrounding donations as gifts?

Hi,
We're hoping to encourage people to buy a donation as a Christmas gift and are considering the GDPR implications - having done some research I can see that some charities send out a card acknowledging the donation / thank you pack for the purchaser to pass on. Some allow you to input the recipient to send direct to.
Our thoughts are around how we deal with people's data who haven't given it to us themselves - essentially if we go down this route we know we couldn't sign them up to any comms or similar unless they sign up as a result of receiving the gift. This would be the same principle as anyone buying any gift and providing the details of the recipient.
I just wondered if anyone else does this, or anyone has any thoughts on GDPR implications (presumably best to have a section of privacy policy to make clear that you collect details of gift recipients and that they're only used to send the related info / items out)
