Yesterday The Big Help Out campaign was launched, which was not only a great way to celebrate volunteers up and down the country, but also highlights the importance and benefits of volunteering within local communities.
According to the latest figures 5.86 million people participated, with 12% stating they are more likely to volunteer in the future as a result of the campaign. 
As we know, volunteer numbers have been dwindling in recent months, so hopefully with these inspiring numbers we will start to see this start to rise again.

At the risk of being all bah humbug, I thought it was a terrible idea. 
Getting a very large number of people to volunteer all on the same day in a one-off way is a ridiculous thing to expect smaller charities to be able to accommodate. 
So I ignored it and spent the day with my head in a bucket.

Edward Hibbert   I know there was talk of making it a yearly campaign, as opposed to a one-off.
I think it would be more effective if they dedicated a month, or longer period of time, to encourage people to volunteer so this wouldn't create any unnecessary pressures on small charities.  
I agree that it must have been quite overwhelming for those smaller charities, but hopefully more good came out of it than bad!
