Volunteers taking food, what policies can we introduce to stop this? (Anonymous post 🤫)
A friend of mine who works for another charity has been contacting their volunteer pool to see if anyone with projects or research experience can keep these projects live, especially with the news situation changing day by day.
I don't know if using volunteers ike this is currently allowed because they provide a service even though there's no profit. Not yet anyway. It doesn't seem right to me using volunteers to cover the work of furloughed staff, even though I can see possible grey areas with the charity sector taking a big hit right now with less donations and the closure of high street charity shops.
My friend also told me the areas get greyer because the currently furloughed staff have found out about this, and have been making waves about wanting to still be involved in these research projects, asking for email updates from volunteers and giving suggestions by email replies, which I'm sure would be indirectly working for the employer who furloughed them, and not currently allowed.
But on the other hand, the volunteers desperately want to help and want to do anything they can, especially with their usual high street charity retail avenues closed. What is the right thing to do here? I kind of know what the legal thing is, furlough has been described as "all or nothing". Is my friend wrong? What are your charities doing?
