Can the chairperson of a CIO be a paid role?

Governance

Chelsea Groome Chairperson at Woodpeckers Preschool CIO Posted 23 days ago

I am currently the chair (volunteer) of a preschool, which is a registered CIO. I will be stepping down in the summer and we need to find someone to take over the role.
We have struggled greatly to even get committee members or trustees, and there is currently no obvious candidate to take over as chair. While we will put feelers out there to try and find someone, one of the big problems is the amount of work involved for a volunteer role. Between running meetings, organising fundraisers, policy work, admin and dealing with ad hoc problems, I probably spend at least 10 hours a month - more if we've got a big fundraiser to organise.
It's a huge problem trying to find someone who can/will put that much time into the role on a volunteer basis.
Can we advertise the chair as a paid role? I feel if people were going to be remunerated for their time then we might get more people willing to take on the role. It wouldn't be a full-time role - we would just advertise it at 5-10 hours per month, paying for all the jobs done in the background (not attending the fundraisers with other volunteer trustees etc).
