I passionately, desperately, wholeheartedly want to work in environmental politics and/or campaigning.
I left my family, my friends, my home country and my previous career as a freelance journalist behind in 2014 to come to the UK to study an MA in global environmental politics. I thought that the combination of over 10 years of previous experience in communications and media, as well as project management and events organisation, together with up to date substance knowledge and passion for environmental politics and campaigning, would make me an attractive candidate to employers.
However, I've been applying for jobs in my (new) field for 4 years now, and only landed one 3-month fixed term contract in anything sustainability related during all this time. Otherwise, I've had to work in other policy areas (mainly health) in order to pay the bills. In these jobs, I've gained further knowledge and skills in campaigning, policy and public affairs. In 2019, I also co-founded the Degrowth Reading Group London - a space to explore and discuss how humanity could transition into a socially and environmentally just society.
Despite all this, during the last year I have been only invited to one interview, although I sent dozens of applications, and I'm starting to get desperate. I've now been unemployed for 7 months, so sadly I don't have the money to pay for expensive career coaches etc. But I feel I could really benefit from the opportunity to talk to someone who's "made it" in this field, has some connections, could maybe share some tips with me, or guide me on what to do next...
I don't really know how these things work, but I'm happy to offer anything I can in exchange. I'm a native speaker of Spanish so I can e.g. do translations for free, I've also got several yars of experience as a nanny from when I was younger so I can take care of kids, and I know a lot about herbal healing, homemade cosmetics and nutrition, so can give advice in those areas if needed.
Massive thanks in advance for all and any advice - I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
