Securing funding for an unregistered charity

Hi,

I am in the processing of getting things together in order to apply for registration on a CIO basis and wondered whether anybody had been successful at securing funds from grant making organisations/funding bodies prior to becoming registered?

I assume it is harder to attract funds as an un-registered entity and also wondered if it might be inadvisable to speak to prospective funders at this stage?

I would welcome further insight.
