Tips for increasing volunteer retention

Andrew Wilmshurst Volunteering Coordinator at Release International Posted 2 years ago

At the recent CharityConnect Volunteer Coordinator discussion group, we shared some helpful ways to increase volunteer retention. Some ideas shared were:
- Invite them out for a coffee
- Invite them to your staff meetings/days
- Send them birthday cards
There may have been others I cannot remember, but the general theme is always the same; invest time in your volunteers to let them know they are valued. One helpful way to look at it is 'what would you like a charity do for you to let you know you are valued?'.
It would be good to hear from others what they have found effective, and not effective, with adding value to their volunteers.
