CharityConnect: What Myths Would You Want to Shatter?
Imagine you have an opportunity to make a 20-30 minute presentation about the charity sector to a "sympathetic, yet sceptical" audience.  Picture people who care about a range of good causes and have plenty of capacity to support charities with money and time, but have concerns that doing so through a charity, particularly a large charity, is the best way.  Well-educated, professional people who don't work in the charity sector and so aren't with how a modern charity runs.  Open-minded and willing to be persuaded that some of their impressions about the sector may be misconceptions.
You've overheard them chatting before your presentation, and some of the things on their mind are issues like:
"Charity overheads: I've read you shouldn't donate to any charity that spends more than 10% of its income on overhead.  I want all of my donation to go straight to the cause."
"Staff salaries: it's the VOLUNTARY sector.  Of course no one works for a charity for pay ... right?"
"I would never support a charity that sends anything through the post.  Email is so much more efficient and modern."
If you had 20-30 minutes with this audience, what myths about the sector would you want to dispel?  Which ones do you think are the most dangerous for the sector?  If we could definitively clear up one misconception, which one would make the biggest difference in terms of unlocking additional donations of money or time?  I would really appreciate your input - not just as a thought experiment, but also because I have this actual opportunity and want to make the most of it!
Thanks in advance for your help!
