Can volunteers report to the board of trustees?

Must a CIO have a Board Secretary who is a Trustee and a Treasurer who is a Trustee, or can these roles be undertaken by volunteers who are not themselves Trustees but report to The Board of Trustees?
Three of our five founding Trustees did take the roles of Chair, Secretary and Trustee though our standard Charity Commission Model Constitution doesn't seem to require this.
I have Googled this and haven't yet discovered a definitive answer.
