Hi,
I work for a local charity, who i have helped take a long way, from being really ineffective, to being a well run and popular charity for the groups that we serve.
During this time, i haven't really had too much clarity on my role or the organisational structure, but i have pretty much worked to my own devices to turn the charity around. At times i have felt like i have had to remind the board of their duties and advise them as to proper governance and last year actually proposed a structure and model to take our organisation forward, and modernise the way we work - which they accepted, saw it start to work, and are now changing.
To cut a long story short, we have now moved into a brand new building and have amazing opportunities in front of us, but i feel that our board are still holding us back. Here are some examples that maybe people can help me in dealing with:
1. They have become very operational, and ignorant of structures and systems that were previously working, and as a result are not functioning at all as a board.
2. Because of this there is no control over decision making, no accountability and our staff team are left without boundaries, and no clear decision making processes, and decisions are made at random, not aligned to vision or strategy - so it takes ages for small decisions to be made and small disputes grow into larger disagreements.
3.When i have raised this, they are now saying that they want to change the structure to a flat structure - to empower other staff and themselves to be more involved in day to day decisions, insisting they are a 'small team'. knowing how this works from a previous role, there interpretation of a structure is way out and they are giving me no answer to questions i am raising.
4. Board members are related and do not make each other accountable - i have explained this is not good practice, but because of this i feel like things are taken personally, and decisions made between particular board members rather than looking at areas of expertise.
5. Being the person thats previsously been and held myself accountable for everything, im feeling a bit lost - like i don't know what to get involved in or not, or how to manage the situation, as so many people are involved.
6. It feels like the vision of the charity is getting really blurry, and i am considering leaving if i can't get it resolved, as i feel it is my personal reputation as well as feeling stressed and disorientated. I haven't yet, as i feel there is such a good opportunity, and know that given the opportunity, i can really take the charity forwards.
