CharityConnect: Compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma in the helpline sector
How can helpline managers, helpline coordinators, helpline supervisors and members of helpline teams themselves be alert to and protect themselves against the risk of vicarious trauma?
Vicarious trauma is a well-established risk for mental health care providers, helpline teams, first responders and those working to support people who have experienced grief, loss or trauma. It can also be known as secondary traumatisation, secondary stress disorder or insidious trauma.
We've produced a short publication exploring compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma in the helpline sector.
If you are a helpline coordinator, supervisor or manager and have good examples of self-care support systems at your charity, that you are willing to share, it would be great to hear them.
