This question is from a member of our community that wishes to remain anonymous:
I work for a small charity as a contractor, but as the lead one and have overall responsibility for the delivery of the service including stakeholder relationships. I don't have direct management/supervision responsibilities for the two other contractors although they report to me.
We are all currently in a bit of conflict about our roles overlapping, and one contractor has basically decided to pick up a chairing role with the local health centre that significantly overlaps with my role and responsibilities, she is also stepping into the other contractors role quite a lot and emailing our trustees directly, when the usual route is via my communication with them. She asked me about taking the Chair role and I said it could cause confusion with our clients as it is in her own time, but she has decided to do it anyway and this is when she emailed the Trustees. The Trustees are acknowledging that we should be employees and are looking to move us to this from April 2026.
I'm owning here that I feel undermined, but concerned about being a contractor and who really can manage the contractor if we aren't employees and don't have the usual HR routes?
