Funding sources for horse and pony sanctuary

Trusts & Grants

Jayne Boyles Olcote Sanctuary CIO Posted 1 year ago

Hi. We are Olcote Sanctuary CIO. We have just gained charitable status. We have been running for 13 years and need some help and expertise in sourcing funding. We also offer a space for students and people suffering mentally. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!
Best wishes, Jayne, Olcote Sanctuary Team

Hi Jayne,
I'd start with the Directory of Grant Making Trusts (DGMT - aka "The Fundraiser's 'Bible'").
It lists all the trusts in the UK alphabetically - but also has separate lists showing where each trust makes grants geographically and also by charitable activity.
You have 3 choices with this:
  • Buy a new copy - expensive @ about £150
  • Buy a 5-year or so old copy on Amazon books @ about £25 - best option in my view
  • Go to your local Library where you can access a copy free in the Reference Section - but not take it away.
I would start by contacting the trusts most likely to make you a grant, ie.
  • Trusts which give to charities in Staffordshire - there are 16 listed in DGMT
  • Trusts which give to charities involved in animal care - about 56 in DGMT
  • Trusts which give to charities involved in helping people with mental health problems - 15 in DGMT.
Don't write speculative letters. Instead:
  • Check the trusts' entries on the Charity Commission website (and on their own websites if they have them) to make sure that what you want to do falls within their grant-giving policy
  • Then telephone them to confirm this - time consuming, but will save you time and money in the long run.
Also, try the National Lottery - especially the Awards for All (A4E) programme which offers grants for a wide range of activities and projects up to £20,000.
Good luck !
Best wishes,
Jimmy

Hi Jayne,  I meant to add that www.mypetmatters.co.uk has a support programme for small animal rescue shelters. Use the contact form and we should be able to help. Regards Chris
