CharityConnect: Furlough- what is fact and what is fiction?
Hi everyone, hope you are all doing ok in what feels like an ever changing and challenging environment on both a professional and personal level. As with many other charities, we are currently navigating the complex new realm of furlough. You can read what we are doing in this blog by our CEO.
Furlough is something I had never even heard of a few weeks ago (I am sure that is true for many others!). The process is throwing up a lot of questions as I imagine it is for many other organisations. So, I thought I would set up a thread where people can share the facts of furlough and also help others in banishing some of the fictions out there.
Some examples of questions that have come up so far include:
1) Can you still share things on social media about your charity?
2) Could you volunteer your expertise for similar charities? If so, does it have to be in a different capacity to your normal role?
3) Would you be able to post on sites like this whilst on furlough? (particularly poignant for me as I will be on furlough myself as of Monday and am keen to stay engaged with the community!)
It would be great if people could share their experiences or any helpful links they have found below. I know I would personally find it very helpful and imagine others will too over the coming weeks.
Thanks in advance and sending love and strength to you all 💪

Hi Claire.
From the advice we've been given organisationally I think the answers to those questions (and someone correct me if I'm wrong!) would be
1. you are fine to share,  retweet etc from your charity as long as it's clear it's in a personal capacity and it's not from an official account and you are not identifying yourself as representing the charity.
2. Yes it doesn't appear that there are any restrictions on volunteering other than that you absolutely can't volunteer for your own charity whilst on furlough. But you may find that workload has reduced at those other charities too, so as others suggest more immediate things on your community may be a better option
3. You can't post things that could be construed as providing a service or income to your charity so that would obviously restrict what you do on a site like this and you'd also need to access through a personal rather than work capacity. If it was a thread about sharing tips on  training you are accessing or volunteering opportunities or virtual meet ups with others in the sector not talking about work that should be ok.
Most important thing to remember is that furlough means that your great charity is able to save on costs, so whilst furlough might not be what you want, it is contributing to itour charity's future sustainability. Good luck!

I want to help any charity staff who are on furlough.  I will offer a heavily discounted (80%) coach session to help with any concerns, opportunities to self develop and review of career options.  If you know of colleagues that might benefit suggest they contact me via LinkedIn or my website.
Thanks

Jon Benjamin   Interesting - what do you mean by 'help'? We have been told that we cannot volunteer to do any work for Macmillan.

Hi there Claire
Furlough s supposed to be the government system that help support  during this economic time is supposed to help business owners to prevent redundancies so if they do not have the funds to pay for staff during the closures for example because the core of their business needs of people in it.
Let's say you were a beautician and you owned a salon that did nails or tanning.
If you are finding it hard to pay the staff during the time the shop was closed you will then be able to pay staff - saying  that it gives up to two-and-a-half thousand a month
some Industries that are going to suffer quite a bit from this covid-19 for example colleague of mine is an interior designer and subcontracted he's already been furloughed as none of the hotels restaurants bars are needing his services
At the end of the furlough period he could be made redundant or he could be basically left to fend for himself.
Business Support out there for charities is a little different and I'm not sure how this that actually works have yet to study and look into it.

It seems the government is still unclear about what is going on .changes from day to day as we don't fully understand how big the pandemic will be and how long are lockdown is likely to be so it's difficult for business, families to make arrangements.

To answer your question about voluntary work during the furloughnperiod I would not have thought you would not be penalised for example if I do work in my community helping to deliver food parcels or collecting shopping for my next door neighbour that is classed as volunteering work as well.
Cup of Human Kindness is far more important than any money that anyone can buy!
Please feel free to get back to me if you have any other questions in the meantime do stay well

Great post Clare. Re: (2) one of my colleagues linked me to https://reachvolunteering.org.uk/ which is where a number of people who volunteer their expertise have signed up. I hope it's ok to post that link here because it works both ways, volunteers can find charities and vice versa.

Kim Diprose   Yes, that is very much the case. I hope the government reconsider this because many charities and not for profits I liaise with have very specific skill sets, especially technical and medical. Although many of my colleagues can adapt their transferable skills, the real value for other charities is in them utilising their specialist skills and knowledge for those other charities in a positive spirit of collaboration. I've encouraged my colleagues to take a more mentoring approach instead of just doing things to help. I see the charity sector becoming far stronger when this situation is over. As the saying goes, don't be a stranger.
