How to get into policy/research

Recruitment

Violet A. Specialist Advocate at Anon Posted 5 years ago

Hi,
I just quit my job as a Specialist Advocate at a women's charity. I have an MA in Human Rights. I would really like to do something that implements real tangible change in the field of women's rights, and would therefore like to get into policy/research.
Whenever I Look at research posts, they always require an MsC, or a previous role as a researcher, which I dont have. I have just signed up to an online course at the University of Amsterdam (8 Months long) that gives you a certificate and a background in qulitative and quantitative research. But I fear it wont be enough.
Any advice around what the best way to get into research/policy is at the point I'm at? Would be much appreciated :-)
And secondly, what career prospects are there further down the line for someone in either policy/research? I mean, past the Policy and Research Officer role I mean?
Thanks!!

I think you should try and apply for research job charity job is a good search engine.
Secondly try Specialist Recruitment firms that deal with policy-making roles
You could try working for an organisation that has policy-making involved in it s work
There's an organisation called the rights of women.
Because the coronavirus epidemic domestic violence has increased so it is possible that that you will get more jobs on this area.
Depending on your circumstances you could work as a volunteer and do research.
Or you could try try working for a law organisation.
The online course how much do you have to pay for it it?s a good idea but you need hardcore work experience

Annie Anon   Hi Annie,
Thanks for your response. Do you work in the research/policy sector? Would it be alright if I gave you a ring sometime this week to discuss further?

Violet A.
I just did a role in policy making and I certainly done research for a policy making organisation
If I were you where I would start is by applying for role of an linear attachment to it and then get the feedback from employers
domestic violence has become an issue now because of the lockdown sadly some awful perpetrators have decided this is a good time to pick up on their spouse when they are confined spaces

The difficulty is because of the coronavirus pandemic lobbying to governments about women's rights social care become tricky as the priority now will be dealing with the aftermath of the virus.
Industries like pharmaceuticals biomedical  clinical
Life sciences will become what will be in big demand
Changing policy and law on the other social care issues will probably be a secondary
I'm happy to direct message you if you want to speak some more

Annie Anon   Hi Annie,

Thanks for your response, yes I assumed as much. I guess I just wondered what the best route would be to get my foot in the door... are there other ways of doing research without completing an MSc? etc
