Supporting Charities: Consistency and Staying for The Long Haul

New

MARK COTTINGTON Constructive Space Posted 8 hours ago

As Constructive Space begin preparations for various Autumn get togethers, I’m reminded yet again of the important red lines we sometimes reluctantly have to draw, for ourselves.
This is particularly true of the themes and subjects we introduce at our breakfast briefings.
Constructive are, after all, office property specialists and at the risk of stating the obvious, this is where our focus has to remain.
That said, our team are both individually as well as a company, long-standing supporters and sponsors of various good causes. Indeed, it’s at the very core of who we are.
This is an important emotional as well as financial investment and of course, feeds into everything we do. Occasionally however, it makes it hard to distinguish what can be done from what should be done.
The economic climate being what it is, all good causes need consistency. Symbolic ‘one-off’ fund raisers are all well and good, but unless we’re talking huge sums of money (and we’re not) no single donation will change the fortunes of a charity, particularly one that’s already struggling.
Few will deny the morale boosting affect of a meaningful donation. If nothing else, it says unequivocally, ‘someone noticed.’ This psychological boost, however, is fleeting.
And that’s really the point.
Charities, particularly the smaller ones need consistency to establish any kind of foresight and that can only come from knowns. I’m avoiding the word ‘certainties’, because frankly there’s no such thing.
If a non-profit has a reliable income, even a reduced one, they can at least plan contingencies.
Never underestimate the need to continually remind your supporters of that fact.
