To merge or not to merge?

Governance

I've been wondering about this for a while now. Should charities that have similar goals and beneficiaries merge? Would this help them to increase their impact? And if so, why aren't more charities doing it?
By April 2019, Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now will have completed their merger and be the UK's first comprehensive breast cancer charity. They say this will make them stronger 'with one clear voice for everyone affected by breast cancer'.
When I was wanting to fundraise for pancreatic cancer this year and make a donation, I found it really hard to choose between 3 charities that I found dedicated to the cause. At that point, a comprehensive pancreatic cancer charity would have made things easier. However, I'm guessing there are many reasons there isn't one?
Of course, there are many sides to this debate. Mandy Johnson wrote a great post at the beginning of this year about what she said to Prince William after he'd just given a speech that really encouraged charities to merge. She touched on the topic of whether there are too many charities in the UK, and I'd be interested to hear what the communities thoughts are on this?
As someone who is completely uneducated on the issue, I am neutral and would love to hear what your opinions are. So - to merge or not to merge - what do you think?
