White saviors and Poverty Porn

Marketing

A LC Fundraising Manager Posted 6 years ago

Does our sector generally promote White Saviors and Poverty Porn given the lack of BAME representation at senior levels. If those making strategic decisions do not represent the communities they seek to serve - does it just look like we're privileged westerners "saving" the world??
Is it fair to promote images of poverty as a fair representation of a whole country or continent?
Is this offensive to those that have their ethnic origins in these countries to be bombarded with negative images and stereotypes all the time? What can we do better? And is the real problem that this is a white-led sector who don't understand how a person of colour would feel about these images and style of fundraising??
