We have just been offered, and turned down, the ownership of a piece of land (actually a disused dam on a river) that could be used to enhance the environment and improve access. We turned it down because of the long-term maintenance issue and some significant risks that the trustees were not prepared to accept.
Our suggestion to the current owners is that they create a charitable trust and give the land to that trust, preferably with an endowment to fund some of the maintenance.
Does anyone have any experience, or expertise in, this sort of situation that you might like to share?
