DBS checks/overseas background checks

Hi all,

If a volunteer role requires a DBS check, and the applicant declares they have lived outside of the UK for 6 months or more within the last 5 years, we also request an overseas background check for any other country they have lived in within this time. The cost of these checks varies (between £25-£400) depending on the country they are required which is an additional expense to the service. I would like to know if:

Anyone else completes these checks when a volunteer has lived outside of the UK within the last 5 years. If not, do you have anything else in place?
If anyone requests repayments from volunteers if they leave their volunteer within a short period (I imagine this is a huge no but I have been tasked to find out)

Any insight or advice would be great.
