Donor as trustee: How do we ensure no lines are blurred?

Can someone who has donated a substantial amount to a charity (in the region of several hundred thousand pounds) join the charity as a trustee (in this a foundation CIO)?
If the person does join, how do the trustees ensure that they don't have undue influence on how the money is spent?
