Can I please ask which team (or roles) in your charity leads on volunteer attraction, recruitment, engagement and development in your charity? If anyone has org charts to support this, it would be very helpful for me to have a visual.

Hi Annette, I am the Volunteer Manager for a medium sized charity. I completely understand it may be difficult for small charities to have a dedicated person for this role, but the benefits are huge. Since joining my charity 2 years ago, I have increased volunteer numbers from 4 - 60 and roles have diversified and grown. If you really want to attract volunteers it's worth considering as the problem I hear most often from volunteers is that they apply to volunteer and don't hear anything back. Understandable if someone is trying to fit in to their main job. We don't have a problem attracting volunteers and our volunteer retention is great, which only comes with having a dedicated person in this role

Hi,
Attracting volunteers used to be lead by an individual in our fundraising team. This now sits centrally with me, as there is a lot of synergy with HR. In smaller organisations it is usually a part of another role, just where it makes the most sense. We use volunteer recruiting boards and work with local volunteer centres to advertise roles.

Angela Haylock   Currently sits with me as CEO as we dont have a dedicated lead in the charity.  We use social media and website, plus word of mouth to recruit.  Have paused recruitment for a short time to see how better we can resource the role and may advertise for a volunteer 'Volunteer Manager' to help us get a new plan underway.
