CharityConnect: Meet CharityConnect Champion, Junior Smart
Tell us about SOS Gangs in three sentences?
SOS Project is the largest ex-offender led project in the country.
It provides an holistic tailor-made service to those caught up in negative lifestyle choices such as serious youth violence, gangs or group offending and aims to get them back into education, training and employment.
We have had incredible success both in terms of having a high take up rate and reducing re-offending amongst our client group.

What gets you up in the morning?
I am continually driven by the needs of the young people and duly reminded every day when I hear about another young person losing their life through a mindless act or another vulnerable young person being exploited. It saddens me that a person's future can just be snuffed out or radically changed because it is deemed without value and the speed at which we tend to want to move on without really seeing what is happening.

If you could have any other job what would you be doing?
I would like to think that with my continued education and the right government I would be advising social policy. So much could be changed that would ultimately extend the lives and potential of young people. But the conditions need to be right and society needs to be ready.

Tell us about one thing you wish you could change right now?
I would incentivise businesses to give more offenders a second chance - again there are simple things here that could be implemented such as a reduction in NI or taxes that could really create a cultural shift in terms of the numbers of businesses willing to give them a chance.

What conversations do you want to see on CharityConnect?
I am interested in connecting with people and their passions all over the sector and really excited about having those 'big change the world conversations' that invigorate and inspire.
