CharityConnect: Planning a Relocation of Refurbishment? Before you do anything else, talk to your staff
Designing for the Five-Generation Workforce...
Or... not?!
This very current expression refers to the scope of the current working population, especially in the charities sector. We're more aware than anyone, that people over 75 are still diligently volunteering or drawing part-time salaries in retail outlets.
Still, retail isn't office and the reality is that very few 'Traditionalists'  (those born before 1946) are sitting at a desk somewhere. In a recent and very unscientific survey, it turned out the main issue wasn't the desk, so much as the commute, that puts older people off. In an odd parallel that was also the reason stated by young people, looking to remote work..
So what we're really talking about is a 4 Generation Workforce and an office culture that meets these very new aspirations, now becoming 'norms'.
It's a daunting prospect for any Office or Project Manager planning a fit out or move. Really though, it shouldn't be.
Whilst it's important to stay up-to-date with the latest ideas and approaches, no one should buy into sound bytes over their own knowledge and experience.
Generational stereotypes help simplify the workforce into neat categories, but it's only a starting point. Older staff don't always want private offices and few Gen Zs' aspire to working on laptops, sitting on beanbags in espresso bars.
The common factors are all there if you look, which is why we recommend talking to staff and establishing them from the outset, long before starting any other processes.
For example, a key factor today is almost everyone seems to detest the commute, especially in London.
So in one sense, the implication is that as far as possible, your office/workspace has to reflect both the necessity of that imposition and the value the organisation places on an individual being present, whatever their role.
A rubbish 40 minutes on the Tube, then rushing through pouring rain, ideally needs to conclude with some sense of 'having arrived' in an environment that makes it all worth the trouble.
If not addressed properly, this single issue can lead to staff retention issues.
We have a number of free guidance documents and case studies, for whoever is interested.
