CharityConnect: Career change: if you’re stuck, you’re probably skipping the most important step.
So you’re unhappy in your career and you’d like to change it…
...where would you start?
Let me guess…you’d sit down, list all your skills, recall all your volunteering experience and try to match all this with the what the job market currently offers.
W-r-o-n-g! (although very common)
That would be the perfect recipe to end up in another golden jail, where it all looks good, and you still can’t help but feeling low.
The truth is changing career has little to do with your skills and experience, it’s more about discovering who you really are, what drives you, what makes you feel alive, and then your values, your natural talents, your passions, your strengths and so on.
Miss this step, and you could be stuck trying to change for years (like I was).
Beyond the most obvious reasons why you’re unhappy, there must be something in your career that doesn’t resonate with who you really are as an individual. What is that? Can you name it? Or is it just a sensation? If this key point isn’t clear enough, you shouldn’t look at the job market yet, at least not until you reconnect with your-true-self and get crystal clear on:
What makes your heart sing? What drives your energy level? What makes you feel alive? What’s not negotiable for you? And what would you do, if you had nothing holding you back?
Being clear on what alters your energy level is key for a sustainable change, and that’s why you need to focus who you are first, rather than what you can do/offer.
Remember, you’re a human being, not a human doing.
Are you a morning or an evening person? Do you enjoy taking risks? Are you a routine type? What is your learning style? In what way you like to be rewarded?
These are just examples of powerful questions you should ask yourself: always ensure your choices resonate with your-real-nature to better guarantee success, balance, and fulfilment.
“How can I do this?”  I hear you say – well there are tons of great self-help books which could help you, just commit 100% with what they request you to do, otherwise, you’ll turn them into just shelf-help books.
If self-discipline isn’t your thing, you may find it easier to hire a professional Life Coach who will help you uncover your real nature, and guide you towards a successful career and ultimately life change.
It’s not a cliché when they say, “it all starts within you”: you really have the power to achieve anything you want in your life, and the only way you can do it is to Think & Act differently.
The only “obstacle” is that you may not know “how” to Think & Act differently, as it’s actually something you’ve not been trained to do: a Life Coach will help you with that, too.
Due to a complicated past, I had to learn it on my own, slowly realising that the only way I could turn my life upside down was changing the way I interacted with the world. Not easy at all, but it certainly pays off (should you be curious, you can find my story here: www.brunadepalo.com/about-me).
On top of that, as a professional Life Coach, I get evidence of this simple truth with my clients every single day: it’s mind blowing what happens when people learn how to change their thoughts.
Back to the career change, the first step should be increasing your level of self-awareness, and be clear that the right career for you is the one that truly does value (and makes the best use of) who you really “are” as a whole. You’re much more than your skills, and when you do something that truly resonates with your-whole-self, chances are you’ll become very successful at what you do. Isn’t true that when you do something you’re truly passionate about, you succeed at that more than anything else? How do you feel when you are valued and rewarded as a person? What if that would happen every day in your work-life?
The only way you can get that is discovering who you really are.
Skip this step only if you could genuinely say that you’re truly connected with your-real-self.
Could you?
