It is obvious that as with organisations, some charities are better organised than others. From my recent experience, it is annoying and frustrating when charities take their volunteers for granted. When I work pro-bono as a trustee (or any other non-paid position) for a charity or any organisation, I do NOT expect to be paid for my time or professional input but DO expect to be reimbursed for expenses incurred. When I travel long distances for meetings, I incur costs and when the charity cannot meet those costs, they are basically also asking me to meet some of their running (operational) costs in addition to me donating my time and expertise free of charge. That is not part of the deal. In another instance, I send my CV to a charity that clearly spells out my experience at senior leadership level - operations, change management, strategy setting and implementation, staff motivation - and the best they can get me to help them is to sort out books and arrange them on shelves in one of their retail outlets. That is a misuse of my qualifications and experience. It is regrettable that while some of us from the corporate world can bring a lot of efficiency into the charity sector, many charities prefer people who have had a lot of experience working in the charity sector. A mix of the two will cross fertilize but a strict preference for one will result in just more of the same.
