Hi Everyone,
I work for a company called NL Recruitment which specialises in charity sector recruitment.
I am interested to see how this community finds the entire job hunt/ recruitment process when searching for their dream career in this sector. How are you getting on and what are you struggling the most with?

I find recruiters want specialisms but my ability to do a bit of everything from comms to fundraising has been really valuable in all the small charities I've run.

My biggest concern is that recruitment consultants are just great salespeople (who over promise and under deliver), willing to take on any role for a client (even one they don't have a description for), and, do not seem capable of being truly game-changing for the diversity and depth of the sector.
Especially, how recruitment consultants leave candidates behind. Even the group behind this website can be said to have done that. NL recruitment, definite. Eden Brown, Hays, Pertemps. When you rely on the temporary market for work and call it flexible, it can be misleading.

My biggest bug-bear is people pulling out on the day of the interview or, even worse, just not turning up for interview. This used to be incredibly rare but now seems much more common. It is disrespectful to the interviewers who have read the application and prepared for the interview and unfair on other applicants who might have been offered an interview if there had been a space. Grr!

Paul Marriott   at what level of recruitment are you talking Paul, at a management level or care/support level?

Paul Marriott   Yes we seem to come across that ourselves as recruiters, however, these are for our part-time fundraising roles rather than our head office roles. But interested to hear which level you are speaking about.

I would say panel interviews by charities are a nightmare! They have so many opinions between them so cannot agree - and seem to be looking for a perfect candidate which does not exist! I have had panel interviews where I was one of 4 being interviewed that day, then 2 months later I get another agency come to me with the same job - so clearly they didn't hire anyone - why not?
It does also seem that hiring managers are clueless on what is appropriate level of experience, they seem to want Head of Dept level experience but are only paying for a junior manager salary. There is a disconnect between what they think they can get for the salary they are offering. Respect that people want to be paid for their experience and not taken advantage of!
I also find it much harder as a woman of colour to get respected for my experience that a white male that I line-managed who actually got given his job as he was friends with the boss, and is naturally now earning more than me despite a wide gap in his experience compared to mine. Charities often work on their own personal networks to avoid paying agency fees. But this just means unconscious bias, racial profiling, ageism, nepotism and cronyism are alive and kicking.

Jonathan Spencer   Thanks for your reply, and yes you are quite right to point out that candidates turning down jobs can be a reason for why jobs are re-advertised - although I do have to say I know of a few that didn't offer to anyone and are still looking because panels cannot decide on what sort of person they want - one person thinks a candidate is a great fit whereas someone else feels threatened by their experience.
You are also right to point out that the biases in recruitment and pay have been neglected in this sector - I genuinely think that senior management teams that really have no concept of what discrimination is are afraid to open the Pandoras box! They don't want to uncover the detail on the sort of people they hire, and what they pay for fear of showing  themselves up as perpetuating discriminatory work practices. Contrary to feeling that they are lucky to get anyone, I feel that they have a perception that anyone would be "lucky to work here" An arrogant and snobby self-belief!

A LC   Interesting take on this. I've just read an article about how diverse the charity sector is and may be of interest from a broader perspective:
