Registering a UK charity to fundraise for an Afghani charity

Liz Robinson Co-Founder at Charmaghz Posted 2 years ago

Hi all,
I'm in the process of registering a UK charity to serve as a fundraising arm for an existing charity registered in Afghanistan; we are not planning for the UK charity to run any actual programs itself. A couple of questions have come up in the process that I'm not sure how to address. Any guidance would be much appreciated!
1) Practically speaking, how do we "link" the UK charity to the Afghan charity. Is this just through a MoU after the UK charity is registered? (Would anyone be able to share a template of such an MoU?)
2) To what degree should we discuss the Afghan charity in the UK charity application? My understanding is that we need to demonstrate that the UK charity is independent - so I assume we shouldn't explicitly say that the UK charity is being set up to fundraise for the Afghan charity?
3) My understanding is that the UK charity will need to have a name that's different from the Afghan charity. In turn, I'm wondering whether we should set up a separate website, social media accounts, and basically whole separate external comms presence for the UK charity (in addition to the Afghan charity?). Any thoughts on best practices here would be very helpful!
4) The Board of the UK charity will obviously be only for the UK charity, but I am expecting this to be a slippery slope in terms of the Board also getting involved in the affairs of the Afghan charity itself. Any guidance on how others have handled this in the past would be helpful!
Thank you!
